COAL

Progressive
Enduro Bike

„More travel, slacker head angle and optimized kinematics. Everything is consistently designed for demanding enduro use. The rear suspension feels plusher without losing support and agility. The COAL is really fun and extends my limits. Our best aluminum frame so far.“

The new COAL

The COAL excels at the descend. The suspension is sensitive at the beginning and generates a lot of grip. The middle section is relatively linear. The system therefore remains high in its travel and provides an active ride. This is also the reason why air and coil shocks work equally well. The progression only increases significantly towards the end of the travel and creates a great bottom-out protection.

Geometry

The geometry of the COAL is clearly designed for demanding enduro riding. The modern reach-to-stack ratio ensures best riding position on the bike. The 63 degree head angle generates a lot of confidence in rough sections and keeps the speed high. The chainstay length increases in size 195 up to 447 mm and ensures very good integration into the bike. For sizes 165 and 175 the chainstays are so short that the lively MX-setup is mandatory. Specified is the geometry with 180 mm fork. Whith a 170 mm fork, the steering angle will be about 0.4 degrees steeper and the reach grows by 5 mm. The full geometry with 170 mm fork will follow shortly.

Leverage Ratio

Progressive Suspension System

We have been successfully implementing progressive suspension systems for over 20 years. The variation of link and rocker makes it possible to adjust the leverage ratio and suspension travel for the intended purpose. Modern shocks offer more adjustment options that can be used for personal customization. This has enabled us to slightly reduce the progression. The use of the suspension travel is optimized without releasing too much travel in the middle of the stroke. The progressive characteristic leverage ratio is well suited to coil and air shocks. We calculate the progression from the SAG point, as we consider this value to be more meaningful.
Anti-Squat

Anti-Squat

In order to generate the best possible pedalling efficiency for every frame size, the kinematics have been optimized so that the differences between the anti-squat curves are minimal. In addition to the improved riding position, the slightly increased anti-squat value ensures greater pedalling efficiency. In blue the graphs show the anti-squat value of the four frame sizes depending on the gear engaged. Shaded in gray are the curves that would have resulted without size-specific correction. This complex design is particularly advantageous for short and tall riders, as they would otherwise be far from the optimum due to their low respective high center of gravity.
Anti-Rise

Anti-Rise

The anti-rise value determines how the suspension behaves when braking. Values below 100 % tend to cause the rear triangle to extend under braking. Above 100 %, the rear compresses and the suspension behaves firmer. The size-specific optimization of the position of the pivot points results in practically congruent graphs, shown in blue, for all four frame sizes.

Progressive Suspension System

Levarage Ratio We have been successfully implementing progressive suspension systems for over 20 years. The variation of link and rocker makes it possible to adjust the leverage ratio and suspension travel for the intended purpose. This results in two optimized kinematics for COAL and GLEN.

Anti-Squat

Anti-Squat In order to generate the best possible pedalling efficiency for every frame size, the kinematics have been optimized so that the differences between the anti-squat curves are minimal.

Anti-Rise

Anti-Rise The anti-rise value determines how the suspension behaves when braking. Values below 100 % tend to cause the rear triangle to extend under braking. Above 100 %, the rear compresses and the suspension behaves firmer. The size-specific optimization of the position of the pivot points results in practically congruent graphs, shown in blue, for all four frame sizes.

Features

WARRANTY AND CRASH REPLACEMENT

The COAL frame is warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for 6 years - racing included. If the frame is damaged due to a crash, our crash replacement program will take effect. Since we do stock the individual parts of the frame, it is rarely necessary to replace the entire frame. The crash replacement is valid within the first three years from purchase and includes a 50 % discount on the respective frame components. We approve the COAL frames for use in category 5 according to ASTM F-2043-13. To be able to use the entire bike in this category, suitable components must be installed.

FUNCTIONAL FRAME DESIGN

The design of the new frame generation is straightforward and clean. Not every shape can be realized light and durable at the same time. Primarily the concept needs to work on the trail. The focus is therefore always on performance, meaning the combination of functionality and light weight. Form follows – the seat stays and the top tube run elegantly in a diagonal. The top tube sits lower on the now entirely completely straight seat tube. This saves weight, increases stiffness and the standover height is lower across all frame sizes. Insertion depth is plenty while seat tubes are short. The head tube length increases significantly for the larger sizes, so that unnecessary spacer towers can be dispensed with. The picture shows the frame after smooth welding in frame size 195.
hybrid manufacturing - welding in Taiwan

Hybrid Manufacturing

Our frames are welded, aligned and heat-treated in Taiwan, while final machining of the threads, contact surfaces and bearing seats is completed in Germany using 5-axis-mills. We check the individual parts before assembly and press in the bearings. This way we can control the quality, proper assembly and perfect function of each frame.
LAST - Total Bearing Quality

Total Bearing Quality

Each front and rear triangle is machined on a high-precision 5-axis milling machine in one setup. The aim is to achieve a high-quality and, above all, durable bearings. In addition to the bearings as such, this includes the bearing seats, the alignment of the bearing seats to each other and the mounting and protection against dirt. Stainless steel full complement bearings allow for better load carrying capacity and increase the radial stiffness while increasing corrosion protection. The machining of all bearing seats on the frame allows for the most precise diameter, shape and position tolerances, so that components are not stressed during assembly and operation.

UNIFORM BEARING AND BOLT SIZE

For the entire frame, we use the standardized bearing size 28x15x7 mm, which is available worldwide. We mount full complement bearings made of stainless steel from Enduro Bearings, which are fully filled with grease. Stainless steel full complement bearings allow for better load carrying capacity and increase the radial stiffness while increasing corrosion protection. M15 bolts of the same type are used uniformly on the front- and rear triangle as well as on rocker and link.

SEALED C-Lock-RINGS

The C-lock rings of the bearings have an integrated sealing function. For this purpose, they are overmolded with rubber. If necessary, they can be replaced by standard parts available worldwide. The C-lock-rings are colored red in the CAD image.
sealed C-lock-rings shown in red

Captive Hardware

The additional washers required for the trunnion mount are captively pressed into the rocker. The washers additionally seal the bearing seats from the inside and are shown in blue. The lower mounting hardware is made of titanium and PVD coated.
